Forest
management is composed of a variety of issues including timber
harvest, wildlife and pest
management, planting trees, forest
regeneration and the harvest of non-timber forest
products. Environmental protection is another aim of forest management.
In addition to resources provided by consulting
and state foresters there are a number of publications that provide
a good overview of Best Management Practices
(BMPs) in these areas. Some of the most useful include:
Forest
Stewardship and Best Management Practices in Pennsylvania's Forests,
is
a 12 page, easily accessible document outlining the BMPs that benefit
a wide array of forest resources and values. These BMPs outline what
needs to be done to ensure forest sustainability.
Best
Management Practices for
Pennsylvania's Forests
is a 52 page comprehensive document providing guidelines for pursuing
various components of forest resource management- including planning,
forest renewal and tending, and protecting nontimber resources, such
as aesthetics and wildlife habitat. This publication promotes stewardship
through education, cooperation and voluntary action.
Moving
Toward Sustainable Forestry: Strategies for Forest Landowners
is a publication that focuses on the many reasons for practicing sustainable
forestry and how they relate to long-term forest productivity. Topics
include financial incentives, maintaining water quality, recreational
and aesthetic values, wildlife habitat and enhancing tree growth.
A
Forest Landowners Guide to Internet Resources provides pamphlets,
fact sheets, brochures and a variety of resources by state. A great
starting point for inquisitive forest landowners. Topics include forest
management, wildlife, hunting, timber sales, identification and species
information.
