Non Timber Forest Products

Non timber forest products (NTFPs) include all non timber vegetation in forests that provide potential economic value. Some commonly collected NTFPs in the US include wild mushrooms, berries, ferns, tree boughs, cones, moss, grapevines, maple syrup, honey and medicinal products like ginseng.

Gathering these products from the land has been a cultural link between people and forests for centuries.

Today, many gatherers collect NTFPs from forests throughout the world. However, overharvesting and habitat destruction endanger some of these wild populations. Educating oneself is vital to the future of such forest products.

Non Timber Forest Products is the place to learn more about the use and markets for non-timber forest products. This page seeks to provide information in simple formats and serve as a national clearing house that is useful by NTFP harvesters and growers, marketers, processors, and end-users.
